Obituary

Douglas D. Spurlock, age 80, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home on July 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a devoted father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, a beloved brother and uncle, and a friend to many. He was born on October 30, 1944, in Harveyton, KY to John Wiley and Ethel Wells Spurlock. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Lexington, KY; where he met the love of a lifetime in Carolyn Sue Rollins. They were joined in marriage on October 19, 1963 at 7th Street Church of God by Reverend E W Carden. This church saw a few name changes, due to the location of the building, and is known today as Man O War Church of God. It was the home church of Doug and Sue before they were married and continued to be their place of worship until they were called home. Doug and Sue were proud parents to sons Robert Dale Spurlock and wife Rebecca, and Douglas Lee Spurlock and wife Gina. They were also extremely proud of their grandchildren, as well as great grandchildren, and prayed for them every day. Their grandchildren are Jennifer Neihaus (and husband Kody), Dana-Marie Spurlock, Christopher Spickard, Benjamin Warner (and wife Sarah). Doug and Sue were so excited to become great grandparents and never missed a moment to tell folks about them. Their great grandchildren are Wyatt Neihaus, Kooper Neihaus, and Mason Warner. Doug enjoyed a close relationship with his siblings. The love they had for their brother was never more evident than in the last three months of his life. While his son Robert never left his side, Doug's siblings never failed to visit, cook for and care for their brother. They were there to joke around with him, pray with him and support him nearly every day. To be part of such a loving and close-knit family is a precious privilege that Doug never took for granted. Doug's brothers and sisters are Merril Spurlock, Jasper Spurlock, Mollie Stratton, Patricia Smith (and husband David), and Jerry Spurlock (and wife Libby). When Douglas Lee moved back to Lexington several years ago he moved back into his parents home. His parents were grateful and blessed to have him back with them. They believed it an answer to prayer to have their younger son around to help them as they were both advanced in years. It wouldn't be long before they saw it was indeed God moving in their lives when Douglas Dale had a stroke. Sue discussed those scary days and expressed her gratitude that Douglas Lee was home to help. She was grateful not to be alone while her husband was in the hospital. She was very thankful to have her son there to help care for his father while he recovered. Douglas Lee stayed with his parents until he married (actually the new couple spent their first month with Doug and Sue) and after being married for a year the couple bought a home close to Doug and Sue so that they could help them as needed. It wasn't long before Robert and Rebecca returned to Lexington, with their youngest daughter Dana-Marie. Doug and Sue welcomed their older son and his family into their home and everyone cared for each other. This time it would be Sue who would be grateful for care as she recovered from an extremely difficult COVID experience. The way God protected Doug and Sue is a shining example of Psalm 34:7 - The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Doug dedicated most of his working life to serving the city of Lexington with strength, pride, and grit. On the job, he was known as a big cut-up—always ready with a laugh or a smart remark—but when it came time to work, he did so with discipline and determination. He was a natural leader: fair but firm, respected by those who worked with him. At home, Doug was the heart of the family. He loved to joke around with his brothers, sometimes pulling lighthearted pranks on the younger ones just to get a laugh. He gave his nieces and nephews nicknames that stuck for life—a small but meaningful way he showed he cared. He especially adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fishing trips—especially with his granddaughter Jennifer—were some of his favorite moments. He was a lifelong fan of old Westerns, with heroes like Rocky Allen Lane, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, and Tex Ritter shaping his sense of honor, toughness, and humor. Doug was the kind of man who wasn't afraid to speak his mind. He had a temper, sure—but you never had to wonder where you stood with him. And if he loved you, you knew it without question. He was the strongest man we've ever known—a hero to both of his sons—and he showed his love in the way he lived: fiercely, boldly, and with a heart big enough to carry all of us. Though he's no longer with us, his legacy lives on in our laughter, our stories, and the strength he passed down to us. We'll miss him deeply, but we're grateful for every moment we had.
