Obituary

Robert Humphrey Pope, Sr. was born on August 30, 1932 to the late Leslie Sr. and Ethel Pope of Lexington, Kentucky. Robert departed this life on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 in the early morning hours at home with his loving family by his side.

He attended the old Dunbar High School where he proudly patrolled the school hallways. He was united in holy matrimony to the former Ms. Cordia Sykes on Christmas Day, December 25, 1953. They were blessed to celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary this past Christmas. Robert was a proud Veteran who served in the Korean War. The special clock he received has this inscription: "Private Robert H.Pope 549th QM Ldry. Co 8th Army 1952-1953 Korea."

He accepted Christ after returning home from war and was baptized at Consolidated Baptist Church. He was a devoted church member serving in capacity as an Usher, Sunday School Teacher and on the Culinary Committee.

After returning home, Robert became a brick mason and like everything he did, he took great pride in his work. He was the President of The Housing Aide Corporation and had a hand in many different organizations around the city of Lexington. He gave politics a try by running for The Office of Fayette County Sheriff. He was a self made business man, having several businesses over the years.

He was Coach of the Phillies Little League Baseball team and the Last Living Coach of Douglass Park Little League in Lexington, Kentucky. Among his many activities one of his greatest passions was being the owner and trainer of several beautiful, winning Thoroughbred racehorses.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his two brothers, Leslie Jr. and Stinnett; his five sisters, Florence, Elizabeth, Betty, Mattie and Ella Mae; and his grandson, Jeremy Pope.

Besides his loving wife of 65 years, Mrs. Cordia Pope, he leaves to cherish his memory his three children, Vivian (John) Bledsoe, Robert (Brenda) Pope, Jr., and Odessa (Alvin) Wells; granddaughter, Kiyoka Wells; great-grandson, J'Marcus Pope; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends.Entombment services for Robert H.
