Obituary

Sherman Art Mitchell, age 92 passed away at his home on the 23rd of September 2024 in Paris after an extended illness. He was born to the late Lloyd Thomas Mitchell and Cora Revel Mitchell on June 29, 1932 in Cincinnati Ohio. He moved to Paris, Ky when he was 6 years old. He was a kind-hearted, gentle soul who never knew a stranger, and loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally.

Sherman only completed 6th grade as he went to work at an early age to help his parents. He joined the Army in 1951 and served in Heavy Mortars in the Korean War, and later as a paratrooper in Germany. He would tell many stories about his Army years, including when he landed in a tree and power lines and broke his nose and all of his teeth, when a heavy mortar shell fell on his foot and he could barely walk but still had to be at his station. He was a proud veteran who loved his country. Dad was a long time employee of the City of Paris where he retired in 1994.

He loved the outdoors. His free time was spent fishing, especially for catfish. He loved to fish at night and fell in ponds, Rough River and the Ohio River many times. He also enjoyed taking care of his flowers, working puzzles, and playing cards. Before he became too sick to go outside on his scooter, he was a fixture at McDonalds, or sitting in the front yard reading a book.

But his biggest passion was his grandchildren who he doted on, transporting them to school and going to sporting, school and special events. He was their biggest supporter and fan.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Mitchell; three daughters, Connie (Daniel) Dampier, Rebecca Mitchell, and Sharon Martin; four grandchildren, Miranda Dampier, Patrick Mitchell, Matthew Dampier and Steven Martin; and several great grandchildren.

His absence will be deeply felt by his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. A special thanks to Faye with the VA Home Care Team and to his aid from Amada Senior Care, Michelle Wagoner.
