Mary Washington White was born on August 12, 1934 in Orion, Alabama to the late Henry Washington and Lessie Washington Sims. She passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the age of 89.
Mary joined Bethel AME Church at an early age in Orion, AL. Upon moving to Lexington, Kentucky, she became a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for
many years. She later moved her membership to Imani Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully and diligently until her health began to decline and she was no longer able to attend.
Mary attended Lindsey Ridge Elementary School in her early years; a school that was built on her grandfather’s land in Orion, AL. From there she attended the Academy Street School in Troy, AL. When she moved to Lexington, she attended and graduated from the original Dunbar High School with the Class of 1954. Mary then went on to attend the Kentucky State Industrial College in Paducah, Kentucky. Mary spent her working career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and retired from their Federal Medical Center as an acting Lieutenant in 1988.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Cheryl Lane Floyd; sister, Carrie Duvall; and a nephew, Michael Washington.
She is survived by one daughter, Melody Lane; one son, Steven Lane; eight grandchildren, Demond Lane, Alicia (Antonio) Redmond, Embry Berry, Tanesha Gerton, Jeffery Floyd, Jr., Chayesha Bentley, Rheba (Douglas) Lane and Steven Lane, II; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, special cousins in Alabama and Michigan, neighbors and friends.
